FAQ - Defensive Driving School

In the fall of 2024, the Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS) mailed letters to parents who once had an open dependency and/or severance case.

What are the eligibility requirements for taking a defensive driving course?

  • You may not have attended a defensive driving course in the last 12 months to eliminate a citation
  • Your citation must be on the list of eligible citations.  Most common moving violations are eligible.
    • Your ticket will say what your citation violation code is
  • Defensive driving school is only eligible for one violation on your citation
  • If you were involved in a serious injury or fatal accident, you are not eligible
  • If you hold a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) you cannot take a Defensive Driving Diversion Program, regardless of what vehicle you were driving at the time of receiving your ticket
  • You must complete your course 7 Days Before your court date
